Walker West Programs
Programs at the Academy have been designed with an eye to learning music -
as an individual and also as part of an ensemble. The Academy's role in this
process is to reach into any person who wants to learn music and pull out the
gift of music that is there within them.
The Academy has four programs:
Private Instruction - individual instruction by one of the members of the Academy's excellent faculty.
Performance Ensembles - four youth ensembles and an Adult African Drumming class provide opportunities for youth and adults in the community to practice and perform. Performances are scheduled by request from community groups.
Summer Music Enrichment Program - offers two sessions of a complete music enrichment curriculum for students from age 6 to 13. Children have the opportunity to explore the piano, African drums, violin, any one of various wind instruments, and voice. Students also take a field trip and hold one performance at the culmination of each three-week (four days/week and four hours/day) session.
Summer Jazz Workshop - A two week workshop for 7 - 12th grade students who have experience with music, but have never tried improvisation in jazz. Through instruction in jazz combo and small groups, students learn about music theory, chord progressions, solo structure, and how to find their own voice in jazz improvisation.
Artists in Residency - focuses instruction that response to the needs of particular schools and their existing programs. This in-school program has had an overwhelming and positive response from educators who work in Minneapolis, St. Paul and surrounding suburbs in private, public and charter school programs. Instruction is provided in African drums, chorale, and band as well as many of the musical instruments that are taught at the Academy.
